Description
In 1875, Colonel Richard Irving Dodge rode into the Wyoming badlands and saw a single tower of grey stone rising nearly nine hundred feet above the plains. His guides told him the local tribes stayed away from it — and that its real name had nothing to do with a devil at all.
For generations before Dodge ever arrived, the Kiowa, Lakota, Cheyenne, and other Plains nations told their own versions of the same story: seven sisters, a brother transformed into a giant bear, and a stone that rose from the earth to save them, leaving claw marks down its sides as proof. Modern geologists, working with radiometric dating and cross-sections the Kiowa never had, still can't fully agree on how Devils Tower actually formed — but the two accounts, one oral and one scientific, describe the same basic shape: a mass of rock rising up from below, standing alone where nothing else does.
In this video, we trace the real 1875 expedition that gave the tower its official name, the mistranslation buried in that name ever since, the unresolved geological debate over how the tower formed, and the striking convergence of oral traditions across unrelated Plains nations who each arrived at the same core image, independently.

If you're drawn to documentaries that take forgotten history seriously — through records, through archaeology, and through the traditions of the people who were actually there — consider subscribing. It genuinely helps me keep researching and telling stories like this one.
Do you think the Kiowa account and the geology are describing the same rising, remembered two different ways? Or is the resemblance just the human habit of finding a story in an unusual rock? Let me know in the comments.
