Description

On the first of December, 1948, a well-dressed man was found dead against a seawall on an Australian beach. He carried no wallet, no papers, no name — and the labels had been carefully cut from all of his clothing. Then investigators found a scrap of paper sewn into a hidden pocket, bearing two words that meant "ended." It was the beginning of one of the strangest cold cases in forensic history. In this documentary we reopen the case of the unidentified man on the beach: the erased labels and untraceable body, the suspected poisoning with no poison found, the hidden Persian phrase torn from a book of poetry, the matching book abandoned in a stranger's car, the uncrackable code pressed inside its cover, the phone number leading to a nurse who reacted with shock, and the modern DNA breakthrough that may finally have given him a name — while leaving every deeper question open. Spy, private tragedy, or something we still can't explain? We review the records, and you decide.
