Description

In 1845, two of the most advanced ships in the world sailed into the Arctic with 129 men to chart the last unmapped stretch of a northern sea route. They were seen once more that summer — and then vanished completely. Not one man was ever seen alive again. It remains the worst disaster in the history of polar exploration. In this documentary we reopen the lost expedition's file: the confident, superbly equipped departure, the ships trapped and crushed in the ice, the single haunting note left in a cairn that passes from hope to catastrophe in a few lines, the doomed march south, the Inuit testimony the world refused to believe, the confirmed cannibalism, and the long debate over what killed them — lead-poisoned tins, scurvy, disease, starvation, or all of them together. Even the recent discovery of both wrecks, found thanks to Inuit knowledge, hasn't fully closed the case. We review the records, and you decide what destroyed the expedition.
