Description

More than 10,000 years of human history lay beneath a quiet rock shelter in southeastern Washington. Then, in February 1969, the entire archaeological site disappeared underwater. At Marmes Rockshelter, researchers uncovered ancient tools, shell ornaments, animal remains, and fragmentary human remains that were considered among the oldest scientifically documented in North America at the time. But while the discovery was gaining national attention, the nearby Lower Monumental Dam was approaching completion. President Lyndon B. Johnson supported an emergency effort to protect the excavation. Engineers constructed a barrier, pumps were installed, and for a moment, it appeared the site had been saved. Then water began traveling through the gravel beneath the wall. Within approximately three days, the partially excavated shelter was submerged beneath the new reservoir. Today, it remains roughly forty feet underwater—and no one knows exactly what evidence was left behind. This documentary reconstructs the discovery, the desperate rescue attempt, and the engineering failure that sealed an unfinished chapter of ancient American history beneath the water. Should the dam have been delayed to protect the site? Share your opinion below.
