Description

Nine bags of lump charcoal. Four objective tests. Zero taste guesses — just weight, data, and a scale. I sorted every piece from nine popular bags, removed every gram of waste, and calculated what you are actually paying per pound of usable charcoal across the most common brands available to Kamado Joe owners. The results were not what I expected. The brand with the cheapest sticker price had rocks in the bag. One premium brand came in at 17.2% sticks by weight. And the cleanest bag in the entire test — zero rocks, zero sticks, zero under-carbonized material — belongs to a brand most people have never loaded into their firebox. I also ran an over-handling test using Kamado Joe charcoal. After sorting a full bag and pouring it back in, I dumped it out one more time. That single extra handling step produced 264 grams of new dust and fine pieces. The way you handle your bag before the cook matters more than most people realize, and that segment will change how you load your grill. Brands tested: Kamado Joe, Fogo Premium, Blue Hog, B&B Charcoal, Big Green Egg, Royal Oak, Meat Church, Cowboy. A note on Fogo: I originally ran the Fogo Extra Large through all four tests. That product is engineered specifically for oversized pieces, which means comparing it to standard bags measures their marketing claim, not their quality. I purchased a bag of Fogo Premium and ran the same four tests on it. The Fogo XL data is shown at the end of the video for reference only.
