Description

In 2003, scientists tagged a healthy 9-foot great white off South Australia — four months later, only the tag washed ashore, carrying data that broke every rule of marine biology. The recorder showed a sudden plunge to 2,000 feet and a temperature spike to a sustained 95°F in water that should have been near freezing. There was only one explanation: the tag — and the shark wearing it — was inside something large, warm, and alive. One by one, every suspect failed the evidence: orcas can't dive that deep, sperm whales run too hot, and no squid is warm-blooded. What passed all three tests is an animal no one had ever considered — and the arithmetic says it's still out there, bigger than anything we've ever tagged.
