A scorpion couldn't cross the river.
It asked a turtle to carry it on its back to the other side.
The turtle refused. The scorpion said — if I sting you, we both
drown. I would only be destroying myself. What reason would I have?
The turtle agreed. Halfway across the river, the scorpion stung it.
As they both began to sink beneath the water, the turtle turned and
asked one question.
The scorpion's answer has survived for centuries because it explains
something most of us spend our whole lives trying to understand —
why some people hurt the ones who help them most, even when it costs
them everything.
This story has been used in Buddhist teaching to illuminate the
nature of character — and what it means when someone's nature is
stronger than their reason, their gratitude, or even their
survival instinct.
This video was created with AI-assisted imagery, animation, and narration.
