Description
📖 Get The Old Gun Hand, fifty years at the gunsmith's bench, written down: https://ivansjournal.com
Go and open the drawer where you keep your gun cleaning things. If it looks like most, there is a kitchen screwdriver in there, a can of something from the auto parts store, and a bottle of solvent that sat in the bore all night last time. And none of it came from neglect. It came from a man who loved his gun.
The worst damage I have ever seen on a gun did not come from a rusty shotgun forgotten in a closet. Half the time those clean up fine. It came from the owner who cleaned every Sunday with whatever was on the garage shelf.
So nobody writes in about it, here is where I stand. Most of these are not junk. Several are good products, a couple hang right in the gun aisle, and one warns you on its own can about what it can do to your gun. This is not a list of things to throw away. It is a list of things used in the wrong place, on the wrong surface, or for far too long. Wherever I can, I show you where the label, the manual, or the maker backs me up.
I have bought enough used guns to read their history right off the screw heads and the finish. Chewed slots, gray patches in the bluing, an action that feels full of syrup. Every product on this list leaves a fingerprint, and an experienced buyer reads it before he even opens the cylinder.
What we go through:
The hardware-store screwdriver, and why a wedge-shaped tip cams out and chews the slot
Coarse steel wool, wire wheels and bristle brushes, and why bronze and looped stainless are a different story
Lead-remover cloths, wonderful on stainless, a gamble on bluing and case colors
Windex on scope lenses, and the ammonia that slowly hazes the coatings you paid for
Foam cases for long-term storage, and the moisture they trap against the steel
Red threadlocker on scope bases, removable only at around 500 degrees
Gun Scrubber that is not polymer-safe, and why I read the back of the can, not the front
Naval Jelly, CLR and rust removers that take the bluing with the rust
Sweet's 7.62 copper solvent, and the fifteen-minute limit printed on the bottle
Chlorinated brake cleaner, the red can and the green can, and the phosgene warning
WD-40, what the company says, what gunsmiths say, and where both sides miss
Oil and solvent in the striker channel, the habit that can turn bang into click
Said plainly on safety: everything here assumes an unloaded gun, chamber checked, ammunition out of the room, and your owner's manual within reach. Keep penetrating oils away from your carry ammunition. If a job goes past normal cleaning, or the gun has real value, pay a gunsmith before you end up paying him more to fix it.
There is no villain in any of this. The lead cloth is wonderful on stainless. Naval Jelly has its place in a refinishing job. WD-40 earns its spot behind the seat of a wet hunting truck. The damage comes from the right product in the wrong place.
I wrote down the lessons I learned the hard way, and the ones I watched other men learn, in my book. You will find it at ivansjournal.com.
Tonight, find your manual. Most makers post them online if yours went out with the box. Then read the back of every can on your shelf.
Tell me in the comments what you put on a gun before you knew better. I will bet a good number of you say WD-40. And somebody out there has a screwdriver story.
