Description
🧄 October is the month most gardeners give up — they pull out the dead tomatoes and put the garden to sleep until spring. And that's the biggest mistake in the whole gardening year.
Because right now, in October, you can plant seventeen crops that feed your family straight through winter and give you the earliest harvests of next year — while everyone else's garden is bare frozen dirt.
🧄 **The alliums** — garlic (plant this if nothing else — it needs the winter cold), shallots (one bulb becomes a dozen), and overwintering onions. Plant now, harvest big bulbs next summer.
🫛 **The overwinterers** — hardy broad beans and peas sown now sit through the cold and give you the very first fresh crops of spring.
🥬 **The winter greens** — spinach, kale (sweeter after frost), chard, winter lettuce, peppery mustard and arugula, and corn salad that shrugs off snow.
🥕 **Roots & more** — fast radishes, spring cabbage, turnips, plus plant-once-harvest-for-years crops: rhubarb, Jerusalem artichokes, and asparagus.
The secret to getting them through: plant NOW (October, not November — they need to root before the freeze), give them good drainage, and cover the tender ones on the hardest nights.
Don't put your garden to bed. What are you planting this October? Tell me in the comments 👇
