Description
What happens when you point the most powerful telescope ever built at the emptiest, darkest patch of sky you can find? The James Webb Space Telescope found 100,000 galaxies stacked behind one another across 13 billion years of cosmic time, and some of that light left its source when the universe was barely 2% of its current age.
In this documentary, we trace the full scale of the universe, starting from the thin shell of air you are breathing right now and journeying all the way to MoM-z14, the most distant spectroscopically confirmed galaxy ever observed, whose light has been traveling for 13.5 billion years. We explore how the Hubble Deep Field forever changed our understanding of the cosmos, how Webb's JADES survey uncovered 100,000 galaxies hiding in a patch of sky smaller than the full Moon, and how the physics of cosmic expansion means the observable universe now stretches 93 billion light-years across, despite being only 13.8 billion years old.
Along the way, we confront an unsettling truth about our own world. Earth, measured against the observable cosmos, is proportionally smaller than a single atom compared to the entire planet. Yet this tiny sphere of rock and iron remains the only confirmed place in the universe from which the cosmos has ever been observed, measured, or understood.
