Description
Why do we twitch before falling asleep? This sleep science documentary explains the hypnic jerk. The neuroscience of that falling feeling, and why the sleep paralysis that should stop it sometimes fails.
Around 70% of people have felt it. About 1 in 10 feels it every single night. And not one sleep scientist on Earth can tell you why it happens.
The kick lasts between 75 and 250 milliseconds, faster than a blink. A signal escapes the brainstem, runs down the spinal cord, and fires muscles in a pattern a specialist can read like handwriting. Then you feel yourself fall off a cliff that was never there.
Everyone repeats the same explanation: a leftover reflex from when our ancestors slept in trees. We trace that story back to the single sentence it came from: A 2006 paper whose own author wrote, in the same paragraph, that the real cause is unknown. Twenty years later, there is still no published evidence for it. And it gets the order backwards.
Along the way: the 2011 Nature study where individual neurons in a rat's cortex switched off one by one while the animal was awake and playing; the Harvard Tetris experiment where amnesic patients saw falling blocks from a game they could not remember playing; an 1890 neurologist whose patients grew afraid of going to bed; a 1920 Lancet report of people hearing bombs detonate inside their own skulls; the glycine mutation that locks newborns rigid at the sound of a door; and the twitching that built your body map before you were born.
Why do you feel like you are falling when nothing about you has moved? Does the sensation cause the jerk, or does your brain invent it afterward? Why does exhaustion make it worse instead of better? And why is the one moment you pass through every night the one you have never once witnessed?
Drop a comment: Have you ever been jolted awake so hard it woke the person beside you, and what were you falling from?
