Description
🏡 Every spring, gardeners hand over good money for tomato plants — and half die to a late frost. Then blight takes the summer crop, and you're buying tomatoes at the store anyway. All the while, the free heat of the sun pours onto your south wall, wasted.
Our grandparents solved all of it with one cheap structure. Here's how to build a greenhouse for about $200 that feeds you all winter.
🧱 **The lie about greenhouses** — you don't need glass, aluminum, or a $2,000 kit. A real, working greenhouse is scrap timber and a roll of plastic sheeting. This is how John Seymour built them for decades.
☀️ **Build it against your south wall** — a lean-to costs half as much (the house is one wall), stays warmer at night, and radiates free solar heat back into your home.
🔨 **The build** — a simple 2x4 box with a sloping roof, on four concrete blocks. No foundation, no concrete. If you can build a shed, you can build this. Cover it in cheap poly you replace every year or two.
🌱 **The year-round system** — start 500 seedlings in spring, grow blight-free tomatoes and cucumbers all summer, and cut fresh lettuce and spinach through the dead of winter — no heating needed.
Honest truth: it won't make you rich. But against a lifetime of buying plants, tomatoes, and winter salad, a $200 structure that lasts decades is one of the soundest things you can build.
