Description

There are about fifty thousand Hutterites in North America. Between them they have roughly twenty surnames. Not twenty common ones. Twenty. Twenty-two came through to this continent and several of those have since died out. In this one I read you the list, which is short enough to read, and it comes in three groups that are a history lesson on their own. Then the practical problem that creates, which has never occurred to you: on an ordinary day I may have to distinguish between four living men with the same first name and the same last name, at least two of whom are related to me. I explain the system we use for that. It is not written down anywhere and nobody taught it to me and it has four parts. Then the thing underneath, which is why there are only twenty names at all. And a rule our people wrote down in the seventeen hundreds, about how close is too close to marry, by men who had no idea why it mattered and had simply noticed that it did. And at the end, the two halves of the same fact. Why I cannot be stranded anywhere on this continent, and why some of our mothers bury a baby. Those are not two facts. They are one. I do not name the conditions. I am not a doctor and naming them means families on specific colonies get recognised in a video, and that is not mine to do. My wife is the head cook on this colony and has her own channel. SOURCES Hutterite Pioneer Surnames, Federation of East European Family History Societies — the twenty-two surnames that reached North America, grouped by origin, with notes on which have died out and which was reduced to two families by the nineteen fifties. https://feefhs.org/node/695 The Hutterite chronicle, kept continuously since 1525. The Hutterite ordinances, 1762 to the present, which among much else address whether cousins may marry. NOTE ON HONESTY The four part naming system I describe is mine, from inside. I have not found it written down in any study of us and I am not claiming it is uniform across every colony. The surname list is from a genealogical source and it is a list of the names that arrived on this continent. It is not a census of what is in use today, and I do not have one of those. And the explanation I give for why inherited conditions are more common among us is the plainest version of the arithmetic, given by a bookkeeper and not by a geneticist. The fact is not in dispute. My way of putting it might be. This channel is narrated by a composite character. The voice and image are AI-generated. Everything factual about Hutterite life in it is sourced above or flagged as my own observation.
