Description

On Labour Day morning in 2019, about thirty animal-rights activists walked into a turkey barn on a Hutterite colony near Fort Macleod, Alberta, sat down among the birds, and started broadcasting live. Dozens more lined the highway with signs. What the colony did next is not what most farmers would have done. By lunchtime, five turkeys had left with the protesters. By December, Alberta had a new trespass law. My name is Andreas Wurz. I keep the books on a Hutterite colony of 150 people in southern Alberta. IN THIS VIDEO - Hour by hour: what happened in the Jumbo Valley Colony barn on September 2, 2019 - What the protesters wanted, in their own words - What the turkey boards found inside the barn - Why a stranger's boots in a poultry barn worry a bookkeeper more than the signs - Five turkeys: how a colony ended it without anyone laying a hand on anyone - The premier's visit, four charges, and the law that followed (Bill 27) - The question underneath it all: what is a man supposed to do when strangers walk into his barn, if he belongs to a people who will not use force? Tell me in the comments: has anybody ever walked onto your land, or into your work, without asking? And if it had been your barn, would you have handed over the five turkeys?
