In 1071, Byzantine Emperor Romanos IV Diogenes marched into battle against the Seljuk Sultan Alp Arslan. The Battle of Manzikert ended in disaster for the Byzantine army and Romanos IV was captured. But Sultan Alp Arslan chose to negotiate with the defeated emperor rather than execute him. Romanos was eventually released and returned to the Byzantine Empire. But while he was away, his enemies in Constantinople had taken his throne.
