Description

In WWII, psychologist B.F. Skinner tried to turn pigeons into missile guidance systems. Here's how Project Pigeon worked and why it was cancelled. 🐦💥 Project Pigeon (later revived by the US Navy as Project ORCON) trained pigeons to peck at an image of a target on a screen inside a bomb's nose cone. Each peck steered the weapon. Three birds were used so the majority could "outvote" a distracted one. The idea never saw combat, but it's one of the strangest real military experiments of the Second World War. 📚 Sources: - B.F. Skinner, "Pigeons in a Pelican," American Psychologist, 1960 - B.F.
