📘 Brenda Cooks: 162 recipes for every kind of week your kitchen goes through
https://brendacooks.com/
If you live alone, I'd bet there's a stack of little boxed dinners in your freezer. Four or five dollars apiece, a scoop of something and six green beans, eaten standing at the counter. My dad lived by himself for nine years on one Social Security check, and I'm the one who sat down at his table and worked out his suppers with him. Our grandmothers never cooked for one, and they never cooked for six either.
In this one I'll walk you through 10 suppers for one, every plate under $1.50 at today's prices:
🥔 The two-plate rule, then fried potatoes with two eggs, potato soup, and tomato gravy on toast
🫘 A pot of beans with skillet cornbread, and the crispy bean cakes you make from the leftovers
🥬 Fried cabbage and noodles, fried rice from cold rice, and a pancake supper
🍗 The ten-pound bag of leg quarters baked once for ten suppers, and the bones saved for the last one
…and number ten, the supper Dad asked for more than any of them.
You're paying a markup for being one person. Cook like you're cooking for three and put the extra away for yourself.
If cooking well on very little sounds good to you, subscribe and stick around — that's what we do here every week. 💛
What was the supper you ate growing up when the money was gone before the month was? Tell me down in the comments.
