Description

There is a detail in Caravaggio's paintings that most people never notice. But four hundred years ago, it was enough to get his works removed from churches, rejected by cardinals, and condemned as vulgar and sacrilegious. Dirty feet. In painting after painting, Caravaggio placed bare, mud-covered feet in the foreground of his most sacred scenes. And the Church was not willing to accept it. In this video we explore why Caravaggio kept making this decision despite the consequences, and why the Madonna of the Rosary is the most powerful example of what he was trying to say. ► Shop Caravaggio's Collection at - https://www.inspiraggio.com/collections/shop-all?gf_684867=Caravaggio ► Shop Art Prints & Canvas at - https://www.inspiraggio.com/collections/shop-all ► Shop Fine Art Phone Cases at - https://www.inspiraggio.com/collections/iphone-cases → Join our FREE newsletter: https://www.inspiraggio.com/pages/newsletter → Follow us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/inspiraggio → Contact: [email protected] 0:00 Introduction 0:37 Pauperism 1:14 The Church 2:03 Controversial Paintings 3:29 Madonna of the Rosary 4:58 Reflection SOURCES Claudia Viggiani, Art Historian — "Caravaggio's Dirty Feet" https://claudiaviggiani.com/caravaggio-dirty-feet/?lang=en Classical Canvas — "A Complete Analysis of Madonna of the Rosary by Caravaggio" https://classicalcanvas.org/a-complete-analysis-of-madonna-of-the-rosary-by-caravaggio/ Medium — "The Secret Behind Paintings With Dirty Feet" https://medium.com/lessons-from-history/the-secret-behind-paintings-with-dirty-feet-81aef4938e40 Caravaggio.org — "Madonna of Loreto" https://www.caravaggio.org/madonna-of-loreto.jsp Ann Treboux — "The Secret Behind Paintings With Dirty Feet" https://anntreboux.com/2023/03/22/the-secret-behind-paintings-with-dirty-feet/ Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna — "Madonna of the Rosary" https://www.khm.at/en/objectdb/detail/1550/ #arthistory #art Copyright Disclaimer under section 107 of the Copyright Act of 1976, allowance is made for “fair use” for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, education, and research.
