Description
Rosemary every day after 60 — what the human research actually shows, what it does not, and why the small kitchen dose beat the big one.
The anchor trial: Pengelly and colleagues, Journal of Medicinal Food, 2012. Twenty-eight adults with an average age of 75, double-blind crossover, dried rosemary leaf in tomato juice at four doses. The smallest dose — 750 mg, a little over half a teaspoon, the one nearest normal cooking use — significantly improved speed of memory. The largest dose, 6 grams, significantly impaired it. A little helped. A lot hurt. Single-session effects, small sample, and the longer study the authors asked for has still not been run.
The smell is not only a mood. Mark Moss and Lorraine Oliver at Northumbria University (2012) measured 1,8-cineole in the blood of people who sat in a rosemary-scented room — higher levels went with faster AND more accurate mental arithmetic. Twenty young volunteers, a correlation, but proof that the compound reaches the bloodstream.
The 75% memory claim you have seen shared? A newspaper missed a decimal point. Moss's own figure was 7.5%. A later over-65 study (150 people) found about 15% better prospective memory — presented at a conference, never published as a full paper.
In the leaf: carnosic acid behaves like a sprinkler head — largely inert until oxidative stress switches it on (Satoh, Lipton et al., 2008). In 2025, Lipton's lab at Scripps built a stable synthetic version and tested it in Alzheimer's-model MICE. Not your jar, not humans.
In the pan: rosemary extracts cut heterocyclic amines in beef patties by up to 92% and 85% (Puangsombat & Smith, Kansas State). Extracts, not dried leaf, and measured in the meat, not in people.
Also graded honestly: the USDA withdrew its ORAC antioxidant database in 2012, and the rosemary oil vs minoxidil hair trial (Panahi 2015, n=100) is one study with no placebo group.
SAFETY — concentrated forms only, not the herb on your dinner: rosemary essential oil is never swallowed and is listed among convulsant oils (seizure history = keep it away). A rosemary essential-oil preparation raised blood pressure in people with low blood pressure. Lab and animal work suggests effects on platelets — anticoagulant or antiplatelet users ask a pharmacist first. Rosemary extract modestly reduced iron absorption in one study. Medicinal doses are advised against in pregnancy.
This channel is education, not medical advice. Nothing here is a diagnosis or a treatment plan. If you take prescription medication, especially anything affecting bleeding or blood pressure, talk to your doctor or pharmacist before using rosemary extracts, capsules or oils.
