Description
In this video, I show you how to replace the gas-charged prop rods that hold up the hood and rear hatch on a vehicle. These struts are found on many cars and trucks and are used to support engine hoods, trunk lids, liftgates, and hatchbacks.
Over time, the gas charge inside these prop rods can weaken or completely fail. When that happens, the hood or hatch may no longer stay open. Sometimes a failing strut will hold the lid up temporarily, only to suddenly collapse without warning. This can potentially cause damage or serious injury, especially when working under the hood.
The vehicle featured in this video is a 2004 Volvo XC70, but the basic replacement procedure is very similar on many other vehicles.
The good news is that these replacement prop rods are generally inexpensive and very easy to install. Replacement struts are widely available through online retailers such as Amazon, local auto parts stores, dealerships, and even automotive salvage yards.
I'll walk through the replacement process step-by-step, including removing the old prop rods and installing the new ones. This is a repair that many vehicle owners can easily do themselves with minimal tools and expense.
If your hood, trunk, or hatch is no longer staying open reliably, don't ignore it. A relatively inexpensive replacement can make the vehicle safer and prevent an unexpected lid from coming down.
