Description

In this video, I tear into the brakes on my 1968 CASE 580CK after discovering that I had virtually no braking ability at all. Once I got inside, it quickly became obvious why. The brake linings were heavily contaminated with gearbox oil, which had leaked through faulty oil seals. When oil gets onto the friction surfaces, the brake linings can lose much of their ability to generate the friction needed to stop the tractor. But that wasn't the only problem I discovered. While inspecting the brake assemblies, I found cracks in the bearing retainer/backing plate. These cracks may be allowing gear oil to find its way into the brake assembly, potentially contributing to the oil contamination and brake failure. I also take some time to explain the unique way the CASE 580CK brakes work. Rather than simply telling you how the system works, I use a drawing and the actual brake components to demonstrate what happens when the brakes are applied and how the various parts work together. Join me as I completely remove and inspect the brake components, investigate why the brakes failed, and uncover problems that could have been hiding inside this old tractor for years.
