In an official statement signed by the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Diana Atwine, the ministry emphasised that disciplinary action against public servants must follow established government procedures. The clarification comes after Kawooya reportedly ordered Candia’s immediate suspension during an inspection visit to the hospital, accusing him of speaking to her with his hands in his pockets. The incident sparked widespread criticism from medical professionals and members of the public, with the Uganda Medical Association (UMA) condemning the minister’s directive as unlawful and lacking due process. UMA called for the immediate reversal of the suspension order, arguing that public servants should not face disciplinary action without following the appropriate procedures. The Ministry of Health’s statement now clarifies that Candia remains in office, underscoring the need to respect established disciplinary procedures when handling matters involving government employees.
