Description
Why do we keep reaching for the things that make us feel good, even when they may be hurting us?
In this clip, the speaker explains how repeated stimulation of the brain’s reward system can contribute to tolerance, meaning you may need more of a rewarding stimulus to get the same effect. Dopamine plays an important role in motivation and reward, but addiction is far more complex than simply having “too much dopamine.”
The idea that chronic dopamine stimulation directly causes neurons to die and that neuronal death is what defines addiction is not an accurate description of current neuroscience. Addiction involves changes across reward, motivation, learning, stress, and self-control circuits.
The bigger takeaway: Understanding how reward and tolerance work can help explain why some behaviors become increasingly difficult to control.
