Description
In 1905, the Colorado River broke through irrigation works and began pouring into California’s Salton Basin. The resulting Salton Sea eventually became a booming vacation destination — before increasing salinity, pollution, ecological collapse and a shrinking shoreline transformed the resort dream into one of California’s strangest environmental problems.
And there’s a particularly good Strange Detour detail underneath all of this: the lake has no outlet. Water escapes primarily through evaporation, but the salts stay behind. That mechanism is central to why the Sea became increasingly saline.
