For thousands of years, humans lived across the Americas long before cities, roads, written history, or modern borders existed. But where did these first people come from, and how did they reach a continent separated from Asia by thousands of kilometers?
In this video, we travel back to the Ice Age to follow one of the greatest migrations in human history.
We'll explore Beringia, the ancient region that once connected northeastern Asia and North America, and discover why the first Americans may have spent generations in this region before moving farther south.
We'll also look at the changing landscape of the Ice Age, the massive glaciers that covered much of Canada, and why scientists have questioned the traditional idea that the first Americans simply walked through an ice-free corridor.
Then we travel to New Mexico, where ancient human footprints at White Sands provide remarkable evidence of people living in North America around 21,000–23,000 years ago.
We'll also travel thousands of kilometers south to Monte Verde in Chile, where archaeological evidence shows humans were already living deep in South America around 14,800 years ago.
But the story isn't simply about one migration.
Ancient DNA reveals a much more complicated history involving population splits, migrations, genetic mixing, and different groups spreading across the Americas over thousands of years.
The people who entered the Americas weren't simply wandering into an empty continent. They carried thousands of years of knowledge about surviving cold environments, finding food, making tools, and adapting to unfamiliar landscapes.
And eventually, their descendants would inhabit almost every environment across two enormous continents.
So who were the first Americans?
Where did they come from?
How did they cross into the Americas during the Ice Age?
And what happened after they arrived?
Let's go back more than 20,000 years and uncover the story of the first peop
