Description

A bang. A cloud in the aisle. A yellow mask in front of you. Hypoxia can slow your thoughts and make you feel strangely calm. Put your own oxygen mask on before helping someone else. Cover your nose and mouth, tighten the strap and follow the crew. After rapid decompression to a cabin altitude of 35,000 ft, the FAA gives an average of about 15-30 seconds of useful consciousness. That means time to take effective action, not time until you pass out. Individual times vary. This is a stylised scenario. Symptoms, recovery and the descent are shortened for the story. Pilots descend toward a safe altitude, preferably below 10,000 ft when terrain permits. The generic cabin does not depict a named airline or accident.
