Description
One Christian woman sits down with a panel of twelve Muslim women on the Dr. DAP show and puts one of the most debated questions in Christian and Muslim apologetics on the table: is Muhammad a good moral example for all mankind? Christina, the Christian voice in this panel discussion, opens the prompt knowing it will be uncomfortable, and what follows is one of the most revealing exchanges in the entire Christian vs Muslim conversation.
The discussion centers on the age of Aisha at the time of her marriage to Muhammad. Christina cites Sahih Muslim 1422, a narration attributed to Aisha herself, along with other authentic narrations from the major Sunni hadith collections, including Sahih Bukhari. Her question is simple. If these sources are accurate, can Muhammad still be presented as the moral example for every person in every century?
The Muslim panelists respond with several different arguments. One sister argues that Aisha was actually 19, using a calculation based on birth and marriage years. She also argues that hadith compilers like Imam Bukhari, Imam Muslim and Imam Tirmidhi lived two to three hundred years after the prophet, so their collections should not be fully trusted. Christina responds that rejecting the narrations of Aisha would place a large portion of the hadith literature in question, and asks what the point of having hadith would be if authentic chains can be set aside.
Another panelist argues that modern people cannot judge the traditions of ancient Arabia by today's standards, pointing to shorter lifespans, cultural differences and the age of Mary in Christian tradition. She also explains that many people in some cultures never recorded their birth dates, using the example of Somali friends whose official birthdays are all January 1st. Christina answers with a moral comparison, pointing out that slavery was once legal and widely accepted, yet nearly everyone today agrees it was wrong. She also references research on the historical timing of
