Description

Who truly continued the message and mission of Jesus: the Apostle Paul or the Prophet Muhammad? In this live debate on Digital Social Hour with Sean Kelly, moderated by Shaman Omar, Christian apologist Cab Malone, formerly known as Vocab Malone, defends Paul against Libyano, known online as the Orthodox Muslim. Over three hours, the two clash over the New Testament, the Quran, textual criticism, atonement, Jewish law and early Christian and Islamic sources. Cab Malone opens with a four-part case built on the acronym PAUL: Preserved: Paul quotes and echoes the words of Jesus on the Lord’s Supper, divorce, loving your neighbor and the return of Christ. He also gets the life of Jesus right, from his descent from David to his crucifixion under Pilate and his resurrection. Apostolic continuity: Paul received the right hand of fellowship from the apostles and took part in the Jerusalem council in Acts 15. Understanding: Paul grasped the cross and the new covenant of Jeremiah 31, which the Quran denies. Life: Paul followed the moral teaching of Jesus, while the Quran, Cab argues, places words in Jesus’ mouth drawn from later legends such as the infancy gospels. Libyano argues that Paul’s letters predate the Gospels and that Paul rarely refers to the historical Jesus. In his view, the earliest Jewish Christian communities under James, reflected in Q, the Epistle of James, the Didache and the Gospel of Thomas, kept the Torah and did not center their faith on the cross. He contends that Luke and Acts do not teach vicarious atonement, pointing to a disputed reading of Luke 22:19-20. He also argues that Paul’s permission to eat food sacrificed to idols in 1 Corinthians 8 conflicts with Acts 15, and that Muhammad continued the Jewish monotheism and Torah-centered message of the historical Jesus. On textual criticism, the debate covers Codex Bezae, P75, Codex Sinaiticus, Codex Vaticanus, Codex 029 and the meaning of a lacuna, along with Bruce Metzger’s textual commentary. On
