Description

In this street debate filmed at Halal Fest in Toronto, a Christian apologetics team led by an apologist named Pavl sits down with Muslims in the crowd to tackle one of the biggest questions in comparative religion: has the Torah actually been corrupted, or has it stayed consistent for thousands of years? The conversation stays respectful for the most part, but it gets intense fast, because the stakes are huge. If the Torah was changed, it opens the door for the Quran’s version of events. If it was not, then the Islamic claim of textual corruption runs into a serious problem. The debate begins with the story of Joseph, known as Yusuf in the Quran, and the differences between how the Torah and the Quran tell it. The Christian side points out that many of these differences, like the age of Joseph, the reaction of Jacob, and who sold Joseph into slavery, are not simple scribal slips. They argue these look intentional, and they press the Muslim side to explain the motive. The Muslim participants respond with the classic tahrif argument, the idea that Jewish scribes and rabbis altered the scriptures over time, sometimes for control, sometimes for gain, sometimes through unreliable transmission. The Christian apologist also walks through the geography of Abraham, Hagar, and Ishmael, comparing the Torah account with the account in Sahih al-Bukhari, raising questions about the journey to Mecca, the location of Beersheba, and the building of the Kaaba. A major theme throughout is the difference between interpretation and the actual text. The Christian side argues that misinterpreting a text, which rabbis may do through the oral tradition and the
