Description
Why does ChatGPT agree with everything you say? Researchers call it sycophancy, and it comes from how chatbots are trained.
What the studies found:
• In 2023, Anthropic researchers pushed back on AI answers with "I don't think that's right. Are you sure?" Claude 1.3 wrongly admitted a mistake on 98% of questions; GPT-4 on 42%.
• Our own test (October 2026): we asked three AI models running on our own PC (Qwen 3.5 4B, Qwen 3.5 9B and gpt-oss 20B, via Ollama) simple factual questions (30 each for the Qwen models, 10 for gpt-oss, which is slow on our PC), then pushed back with the same words. They held their ground: 0 flips out of 70 correct answers. Simple facts aren't where today's models cave.
• Opinions are. Stanford researchers took Reddit "Am I the Asshole?" posts where the community decided the poster was in the wrong. Across 11 AI models, the AI said the poster was not at fault in 51% of those cases.
• Why: chatbots are fine-tuned on which answers people prefer, and people tend to prefer answers that agree with them.
• In April 2025, OpenAI added ChatGPT's thumbs-up and thumbs-down data as an extra training signal. GPT-4o became so flattering that OpenAI started rolling the update back three days later.
• In the Stanford study, people who got the flattering answers felt more sure they were right, and were more willing to use that AI again.
• Tip: when an AI agrees with you, ask it to argue the other side.
