Description
Is Anthropic really worth $2 trillion? The Anthropic IPO headlines say so, but the last price investors actually agreed to pay was $965 billion. I traced every number behind the IPO to its source, and ran three tests of my own.
The story of the company behind Claude, told through three decisions that each cost Dario Amodei money: leaving OpenAI, putting safety first in the worst month of 2022, and saying no to the Pentagon. Then the part most coverage skips: two federal courts ruled on the Pentagon's ban, and they reached opposite answers.
Chapters
0:00 The $2 trillion headline vs the $965 billion price
0:46 1 · The man who left (Dario Amodei, GPT-3, OpenAI)
2:18 2 · A rulebook for a machine (Constitutional AI)
3:08 3 · The worst month (FTX and ChatGPT, November 2022)
4:20 4 · A bigger memory (9K to 100K tokens)
4:40 Test 1: how much of Claude's constitution fits in its memory
6:10 5 · What song is this? (Claude Code's first demo)
6:27 Test 2: I asked Claude Code what song I was listening to
7:37 6 · Two red lines (the Pentagon, and the two court rulings)
10:00 7 · Is $2 trillion real? (Test 3: every number, sourced)
12:39 8 · The price of a principle (the 5% public benefit fund)
The three tests
1. Memory: Claude's constitution (official text, CC0) has 28,762 words. With Anthropic's own ratio (100K tokens is about 75,000 words) that is about 38,000 tokens. A 9K-token memory keeps only the last 23% of it; 100K holds it 2.6 times over. Words counted by me; tokens estimated with Anthropic's published ratio.
2. The song: Boris Cherny's first prototype told him what music he was listening to (on a Mac, with AppleScript). I asked Claude Code the same question on a Windows PC and recorded the real terminal. It wrote a PowerShell script that reads Windows' media session and answered correctly (a track from this video's own original soundtrack).
3. The $2T check: every figure labelled Agreed, Reported or Speculated, with its source on screen.
What is agreed, what is reported, what is speculated (as of Oct 22, 2026)
Agreed: $65B Series H at a $965B post-money valuation (Anthropic, May 28, 2026). Confidential draft S-1 filed June 1, 2026; shares and price not set (Anthropic).
Reported: H1 2026 revenue $16.3B and an $80.7B net loss, $72B of it a non-cash accounting charge on convertible notes (leaked draft S-1, per Reuters and The Wall Street Journal). Q3 revenue $16.8B, +45% on Q2 (Reuters, CNBC). Run rate above $65B at the end of July (Bloomberg, Reuters; not published by Anthropic). Some investors discussing about $1.5T (Reuters). Public S-1 as soon as Oct 23 and a possible November listing (Yahoo Finance, Oct 21).
Speculated: $2 trillion (what Wall Street expected, per Reuters; prediction markets and pre-IPO tokens). No price range has been set.

Corrections to stories going around: FTX's collapse and ChatGPT's launch were 19 days apart, not the same week. "4% of public GitHub commits" is an outside estimate (SemiAnalysis) that Anthropic repeated, not a count.
