September 2026 was the warmest September on record at both National Weather Service stations nearest the Texas Hill Country, and Austin hit 104 on September 11. USDA says canned food keeps best below 85°F and never in a damp garage: low-acid cans hold their best quality 2 to 5 years, high-acid cans 12 to 18 months. In the February 2021 freeze, about half of Texans in one survey lost running water and 3 in 4 had trouble getting food, and a case of condensed soup asks for about a gallon of water, one person's whole day. Doug's garage gets past 100 on an August afternoon, and his cans sat in it for two summers. Nine of these ten cans keep for years. One doesn't.

In this video, we talk about 10 canned foods posted under $2 this week, including the ready-to-eat chicken noodle soup against the condensed can that spends your water, pinto beans and the 12-pack that only sometimes wins, 86-cent Vienna sausage for the get-home bag, the 5 oz tuna against the big can that costs more per ounce, evaporated milk singles against the 4-pack, diced potatoes instead of rice, 50-cent green beans and the case that sold out, corn for a drill-night supper, pull-tab carrots and the $3.97 manual can opener, and sliced peaches, the one can on the list that doesn't keep.
