Description
Ancient Canada reveals one of the most surprising examples of Indigenous engineering on the British Columbia coast: hundreds of ancient stone walls built along the shoreline to create highly productive clam gardens — with evidence showing some were constructed at least 3,500 years ago.
In the 1990s, coastal scientist John Harper was flying over the Broughton Archipelago when he noticed long lines of stacked boulders curving along beach after beach. In the area he surveyed alone, more than 350 of these structures were recorded. At first, some researchers assumed they were natural features left behind by glaciers.
But Indigenous knowledge preserved a very different explanation.
These structures were clam gardens — carefully engineered stone walls built near the low-tide line. As tides moved across them, sand, gravel and broken shell accumulated behind the walls, gradually transforming steep beaches into broad, flat terraces positioned at exactly the right tidal height for clams to thrive.
And the system worked remarkably well. Studies comparing clam gardens with natural beaches found roughly four times as many butter clams and more than twice as many littleneck clams in the engineered areas. The beaches were also actively maintained by digging, clearing rocks and returning broken shell to the sediment — a form of food cultivation practiced directly in the intertidal zone.
Dating studies on Quadra Island revealed that some clam gardens are at least around 3,500 years old, while historical accounts show that people continued maintaining these structures into the twentieth century. Across the broader Pacific Northwest coast, the total number of clam-garden walls and related features likely reaches into the thousands, although no single complete count exists.
In this video, we explore what these mysterious stone walls really are, how Indigenous communities transformed entire sections of coastline into productive food systems, and why what outsiders once described as untouched wilderness was actually a landscape shaped and managed for thousands of years.
