If you wanted to take a fortified post, there were basically two options. The first was a regular siege, which involved digging approach trenches and slowly advancing toward the fort. This was time-consuming and labor-intensive, so it was typically only used when there was no other alternative. The second option was the assault, or coup de main. Here, the goal was to surprise the enemy and overrun them with force. While it was risky, it was often the preferred method, because it could be very effective when done properly. In this practical guide, we’ll show you exactly what to watch out for when assaulting a fortified outpost.
