Exactly 550 years ago, a war, of all things, drew the Old Swiss Confederacy into European politics. In the Burgundian Wars, the Swiss faced Charles the Bold, who dreamed of transforming his Duchy of Burgundy into a kingdom stretching from the North Sea to the Mediterranean. The realization of that dream seemed within reach when his ambitions collided with those of the small Swiss Confederacy. Standing in the way of its powerful neighbor, the Confederates faced overwhelming odds. But then something unexpected happened: the Swiss militia defeated the modern Burgundian army and shattered Charles’s dream of a kingdom.
In this video, with her support, we set out to trace the Burgundian Wars—to understand how this confrontation came about, which interests clashed, and why these wars permanently altered the balance of power in late medieval Europe. This is how modern historiography tells the story of the Burgundian Wars.
