Description
For four billion years, nothing walked. The continents were bare rock and drifting sand, without a single footprint anywhere on Earth. Then something dragged itself out of the water — and the planet was never the same.
The story begins more than 400 million years ago, in the Devonian, in warm shallow swamps and shrinking river pools. Among the fish there was a group called the lobe-finned fish, whose fins were built around bones arranged like a limb: one bone, then two, then a spray of smaller ones. In 2004, on Ellesmere Island in the Canadian Arctic, paleontologists found the most famous of them. Tiktaalik roseae, 375 million years old, had scales and gills like a fish, but also a flat crocodile-like skull, a neck it could turn, sturdy shoulders, and spiracles on top of its head for gulping air.
Tiktaalik never strode across dry ground; it propped itself up in the shallows. But close behind came Acanthostega, with fully formed digits — eight on each hand, not five — on limbs still too weak to carry its weight. Then Ichthyostega, reinforced vertebrae and stronger limbs, hauling itself forward. Then Tulerpeton, six digits per limb, venturing further from water than anything before it.
The land they entered was brutal. Gravity crushed bodies that water had always held up. Gills collapsed in open air. Permeable skin bled moisture away. They breathed by buccal pumping, forcing air down by lowering the floor of the mouth, because ribs had not yet learned the job.
And yet within a few tens of millions of years, their descendants owned the swamps. In the oxygen-rich Carboniferous forests, giant amphibians became the first true monsters of the land: Eryops, over six feet long and hunting like a crocodile; Diplocaulus with its boomerang-shaped skull; Mastodonsaurus, all jaws. Around them, millipedes over six feet long crawled through the leaf litter and dragonflies with two-foot wingspans patrolled overhead.
What does it take to leave the only world you've ever known? And would you have survived what came next?
