Description
The universe is 13.8 billion years old, and it is barely getting started. In about a billion years the Sun will be bright enough to boil the oceans away. In roughly four and a half billion, the Milky Way will collide with Andromeda and the night sky will be rebuilt. And in five billion, the Sun will swell into a red giant, swallow the inner planets, and then collapse into a white dwarf no bigger than Earth.
That is only the first chapter. Star formation will slow and then stop. The last red dwarfs will burn for trillions of years before the final one goes dark, and accelerating expansion will carry every other galaxy beyond the horizon, until the sky visible from here is empty - a universe where no future astronomer could ever discover that other galaxies exist.
Then even matter runs out of time. If protons decay, ordinary material simply dissolves. Black holes inherit what is left, feeding in the dark for spans there are no useful names for, until Hawking radiation bleeds away even the largest of them. What remains is heat death: maximum entropy, no gradients, nothing left that can happen.
So does everything end cold and quiet - or does it tear itself apart first?
