Description
Everything that exists is running down. Stars burn through their fuel, galaxies drift apart, entropy only ever increases - so the universe has an ending, and physics has narrowed it to a short list of candidates. The leading one is the big freeze: expansion continues forever, star formation stops, and the cosmos cools toward a temperature just above absolute zero.
The alternatives are stranger. If dark energy strengthens with time, the big rip tears apart galaxies, then stars, then planets, then atoms themselves in a final accelerating instant. If it reverses, everything collapses back into a big crunch. And if our vacuum is only metastable, a bubble of true vacuum could appear anywhere, expand at the speed of light, and rewrite physics with no warning at all.
The likeliest ending is the slowest. Protons may decay. Black holes inherit an empty cosmos, then evaporate through Hawking radiation, the largest taking longer than any number worth writing down.
So how does everything actually end - and does time still mean anything afterwards?
