Description
India’s startup story has changed dramatically over the last decade and OYO founder Ritesh Agarwal believes one of the clearest signs of that change can be seen in something surprisingly personal: marriage.
Speaking at the Startup Pe Charcha event moderated by Union Minister Piyush Goyal, Ritesh Agarwal reflected on how much India’s attitude towards entrepreneurship has changed.
According to Ritesh, he recently spoke with fellow Shark and Shaadi.com founder Anupam Mittal, who told him that entrepreneurs are now among the top profiles on matrimonial platforms in India.
For Ritesh, that reflects a much bigger cultural shift.
A decade ago, choosing entrepreneurship could be viewed as a risky or uncertain career path. Today, becoming a founder can carry significant social status not just in business circles, but even in how people and families view a potential partner.
Ritesh also pointed to another striking change in India’s talent landscape.
He said that at least one-third of graduates from institutions such as Harvard and Stanford now want to return to India to build their own companies, adding that some of the best talent wants to come back and work here.
Whether or not that one-third figure represents the broader population, Ritesh’s larger point is clear: India is increasingly becoming a place where ambitious talent sees entrepreneurship as a destination, rather than something they have to leave the country to pursue.
And that shift is happening alongside the rapid expansion of India’s startup ecosystem over the past decade — from a relatively young ecosystem into one with founders, investors, global companies and increasingly ambitious deep-tech ventures.
For Ritesh, the transformation is not just about the number of startups India has created. It is about how entrepreneurship itself is perceived.
Today, becoming a founder is no longer automatically seen as choosing an unstable career. For many, it has become a career of ambition, status and opportunity. And perhaps the most interesting sign of that change is exactly what Ritesh highlighted:
Being a founder may now be a green flag on a matrimonial profile.
