Description
Do bees feel pain, and does the queen bee actually rule the hive? This science documentary on bee consciousness asks how a honey bee colony really makes decisions, and whether bees are conscious.
Fifty thousand bees decide, by chemical vote, whether their own queen deserves to live. Scouts argue over a new nest by head-butting each other mid-dance. A worker is taught her language by her elders. Raised without them, she speaks a broken dialect for life. And when a feeder turns painfully hot, a bumblebee weighs the burn against the sugar. None of it comes from a monarch giving orders. There is nobody in charge at all.
In this video, we take apart the oldest story we tell about beehives. That a queen commands and fifty thousand mindless workers obey. We cover the experiment that turned ordinary larvae into queens by silencing one gene; Thomas Seeley's swarms as a brain hanging from a branch; the stop signal that lets bees vote each other down; bumblebees socially learning a task no bee can invent alone; honeybees given human anaesthetic who woke with jet lag; the landmark bumblebee pain experiments, and the counterarguments from scientists who say it could still be machinery with nobody inside.
If a queen is manufactured from an ordinary sister by a feeding decision, who is running a hive? How can a brain smaller than a grain of rice, with fewer than a million neurons, hold a personality, a grudge, and a memory of a spider that was never there? Why does EU law protect the octopus as a sentient being but not the honeybee?
