Description
In 1871, the Italian government commissioned Antonio Ciseri to paint the moment Pontius Pilate presents Christ to the crowd. He would spend the last 20 years of his life working on it, completing it in 1891, the same year he died.
But what makes this painting truly extraordinary is not the time it took. It is the radical decision Ciseri made with the point of view. Unlike every great master who painted this scene before him, Ciseri chose to hide the face of Christ. And the only face we can clearly see belongs to the one person on that balcony who tried to stop the condemnation.
In this video we explore why this painting took two decades to complete, and the powerful meaning behind every decision Ciseri made.
