Description
The Discovery They Dismissed for 30 Years Turned Out to Be Real
Thirty feet down in a Florida sinkhole, in water so dark divers work entirely by touch, lies one of the most important archaeological sites in North America — and it was found twice. In the 1980s, diver Buddy Page and archaeologists James Dunbar and David Webb pulled a mastodon tusk with strange cut marks from the Aucilla River. The date came back nearly 14,000 years old — older than anything the field was willing to accept. So it was quietly set aside.
Almost thirty years later, anthropologist Jessi Halligan went back into that same total darkness. What her team found in 2014 — a small stone knife, radiocarbon-dated to 14,550 years — didn't just confirm the original discovery. It rewrote the accepted story of how and when humans first reached the Americas.
In this video, we trace the full story: the karst geology that turned a Florida river into a time capsule, the Clovis-first theory that dismissed the original find, the coastal migration theory that finally explained it, and the unglamorous, patient science that proved it beyond doubt.
