Description

Make Them Pay: https://knowrightsuk.gumroad.com/l/know-your-rights You're pulling out of a supermarket car park, blue lights appear in the mirror, and the officer comes to the window and says five words: can I see your licence? Most people hand the pink card over with a smile, because they have nothing to hide. But that card is a set of promises to the DVLA, and if the address, the photo or what you told them has gone out of date, the card itself can show an offence with a fine of up to £1,000. And almost nobody knows the law does not make you carry it at all. 📋 WHAT THIS VIDEO COVERS — The two duties that genuinely bind a driver: produce your licence under s.164, give your name and address under s.165 — Why there is no duty to carry your licence, and the seven-day defence in s.164(8) — Why the station has to be named at the time you are asked, not on the drive home — The first £1,000: an address that changed, and the word "forthwith" in s.99(4) — Why changing your address with the DVLA costs nothing — The second £1,000: a photocard past its ten years, and the £14 online renewal — The third £1,000: a medical condition the DVLA was never told about — The second question that catches honest people: "Is this still your address?" — When the car itself can be seized under s.165A, and the warning that has to come first — The exact sentence to say, whether the licence is in your wallet or at home 🔎 SOURCES Road Traffic Act 1988, sections 99, 164, 165 and 165A. GOV.UK: Change the address on your driving licence. GOV.UK: Renew your driving licence. DVLA press release, 24 June 2013. GOV.UK: Medical conditions, disabilities and driving. Rice v Connolly (1966). Every source is on screen as I read it. ⚠️ THE PART TO REMEMBER Producing your licence and giving your name and address are lawful requirements, never requests you can refuse. If it is not on you, say where you will produce it and then go within seven days. Never give an old address as your current one. If a vehicle is seized: comply, never resist. Refuse consent, never a lawful order. FREE HELP FIRST. The duty solicitor at a police station costs you nothing, ever, at any hour. Always the free route before anybody paid. 📘 Make Them Pay — how a complaint about a police encounter is actually made, with five template letters and the parts you fill in marked in brackets: https://knowrightsuk.gumroad.com/l/know-your-rights England and Wales only — Scotland is different. This is general legal education, not advice about your situation or your licence. I am a solicitor but not your solicitor. Is the address on your licence still where you live? Type yes or no, nothing else. #knowyourrights #uklaw #drivinglicence #dvla #ukdrivers
