Description
The Irish Trait Test: Do You Have Any of These?
Four thousand years ago, a man was buried on Rathlin Island, off the coast of Northern Ireland. When scientists sequenced his DNA, they found a tiny genetic change that is still carried by roughly one in five people in Ireland today. It is nicknamed the "Celtic curse," and it was only the first clue.
In this documentary, we investigate whether there really is an Irish genetic signature, and how many pieces of it might be hiding in you.
We explore:
Why Ireland has one of the highest rates of red hair carriers in the world, and why the trait skips generations
What Cheddar Man's ancient DNA revealed about blue eyes and pale skin
How three waves of ancestors (hunter-gatherers, Anatolian farmers, and steppe migrants) shaped the Irish genome
The hidden iron-storage mutation behind haemochromatosis, and why it predates the Vikings
How lactase persistence let the Irish thrive on milk
Why coeliac disease is so common in Ireland
The Y-chromosome mystery linked to Niall of the Nine Hostages
Why the "Black Irish" and Spanish Armada story doesn't hold up
Some of these traits you can see in the mirror. Others you could carry your whole life without knowing. And all of them tell a story about who arrived in Ireland, and what the land demanded of them.
This video is for educational purposes. It is not medical advice. If you have a family history of haemochromatosis, coeliac disease, or other conditions mentioned, speak to a doctor about testing.
