Description
What happens when scientists try to trace African ancestry back to a single source?
For years, many expected a clean answer. Africa is where our species began, so its genetic story should be the simplest one of all. But when researchers sequenced ancient DNA from Ethiopia, Morocco, South Africa, and Cameroon and compared it with every ancient population they had, the answer was nothing like what anyone expected.
In this documentary, we follow the trail from a 4,500-year-old man in an Ethiopian cave to a community of hunter-gatherers buried in Morocco 15,000 years ago, a young boy laid to rest on the South African coast, and four children from a rock shelter in Cameroon. Along the way we get into ghost populations that exist only as faint echoes in living genomes, Neanderthal DNA that traveled back to Africa inside returning migrants, and a new model suggesting our species emerged from a braided network of populations, not one starting point.
We also look at what scientists still don't know. Many of these findings are estimates, and researchers actively debate the details. We've tried to separate what is well established from what is still uncertain.
If you've ever wondered where we all really come from, the answer may be stranger than a single origin.
If this made you think, a like and a subscribe help more than you'd guess, and I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments. Which discovery surprised you most?
