Description

Ancient Canada reveals one of Alberta’s most remarkable dinosaur discoveries: 75-million-year-old eggs containing preserved baby dinosaurs, including embryos so well preserved that scientists could study the microscopic growth lines inside their teeth. The discovery began in southern Alberta, where fossil eggshell fragments led paleontologists to Devils Coulee. In 1987, researchers uncovered broken eggs with baby dinosaurs still curled inside them, followed by additional nests containing embryos. It became the first dinosaur nesting site ever discovered in Canada. The eggs belonged to Hypacrosaurus stebingeri, a large duck-billed dinosaur that could grow to around nine metres long. Yet its eggs were only about 20 centimetres across, with embryos folded tightly inside. One specimen became known for being among the most complete embryonic dinosaurs found in North America. But the most incredible evidence was hidden inside their teeth. Dinosaur teeth formed microscopic daily growth lines, allowing researchers to count how long an embryo had been developing. The result was approximately 171 days — nearly six months inside the egg. That was far longer than scientists had expected. Instead of developing rapidly like modern birds, these dinosaurs appear to have incubated their eggs at a much slower, reptile-like pace. The 171-day figure is considered a minimum, meaning the true incubation period may have been even longer. In this video, we explore how these extraordinary dinosaur eggs were discovered in Canada, what was still preserved inside them after 75 million years, and how the teeth of an unborn dinosaur changed what scientists thought they knew about dinosaur reproduction. #AncientCanada #CanadaHistory #Dinosaurs #PrehistoricCanada #Paleontology ⚠️ Some visuals are illustrative.
