Description
It is Sunday afternoon, you have a fifty dollar bill in your pocket, and it has
to cover the meat for a family of four for seven days. The first thing you see
in the case is a ribeye at twenty dollars a pound.
I am Earl. Thirty one years behind the meat counter. In 1993 Carol and I kept
the grocery money in an envelope on top of the fridge, and we ate beef most
nights that year. Not steak. Beef.
This is the list I would hand my own daughter. Two packages from the regular
meat case, priced off the sale flyers. Seven dinners, twenty eight plates. What
to do the day you get home. Pot roast on Sunday, and the jar that turns it into a
second dinner. The chili that made my wife stop talking to me, and why she thanks
me for it now. A meatloaf that is not a brick. Smash burgers the kids will ask
for again. And the one thing about the big pack that the shelf is built to hide.
If you have not seen the blind taste test, watch it next: a six dollar steak
against a twenty dollar ribeye at my kitchen table.
Nobody paid me for this. There is nothing here to buy. I do not work for any
store. These are sale prices; your store may be higher on a normal day.
Your homework: price the same two packages at your store this week and tell me
in the comments what they cost where you live, and how many people you feed. I
want to see how far fifty dollars goes across the country.
