The Strange Origin of Kleenex | Did You Know it Was Not Intended to be Tissue? #amazinginventions

Kleenex was never meant for your nose — it was sold as makeup remover until customers hijacked it. This strange true story shows how one 1926 newspaper test turned leftover war material into a tissue empire. In World War I, Kimberly-Clark made cellicotton, a super-soft cellulose wadding used as surgical dressing. When the war ended, they were stuck with a mountain of it. So in 1924 they rebranded it as Kleenex, a cold cream remover sold with glamorous Hollywood ads. Then the letters piled up: thanks, but I'm using these to blow my nose. In 1926, a company researcher ran a split test in Peoria, Illinois — one ad for cold cream removal, one as a disposable handkerchief. The nose-blowing ad crushed it. Sales took off and Kleenex changed its whole pitch. Today people say "pass me a Kleenex" even when the box is a different brand. Strange, but true.
