Description

In February 1997, demonstrations broke out in Ghulja, Xinjiang, following growing tensions between the Uyghur population and Chinese authorities. What began as a protest developed into a major confrontation, followed by widespread arrests and a severe government crackdown. In the years since, human rights organisations, witnesses and Chinese authorities have presented differing accounts of the events, including the number of people killed and the treatment of those detained.
