Description
Ask a retired Alabama teacher when her check last got a cost-of-living raise, and she'll tell you 2007. Nineteen years of the same number. This spring, lawmakers added something for those retirees, and it's due this October. It's the last stop on this Saturday errand run.
Eleven new laws come first. A jury summons you can now turn down for good at 80. A Bitcoin machine that has to refund a scammed new customer in full. A lifetime license at the bait shop for disabled anglers.
These are the new Alabama laws 2026 is bringing to town, run like one Saturday errand loop, from the mailbox at the end of the drive to the bait shop, the grocery store, the pharmacy counter and the courthouse square. Along the way: surprise ambulance bills, Fortified roofs and catastrophe savings accounts, three laws for veterans, the grocery tax cut, no more state sales tax on adult diapers and baby formula, a fix for small-town pharmacies, the title fraud law and the free property alert some counties offer, and a bigger shield on the home equity of Alabamians 62 and older. Then the retiree bills that never passed.
If you could add one more errand to this Saturday run, one place in your town where a new law ought to show up, which stop would it be? Tell me below.
